First Pass Animatic

This might be too complex to view on this small viewer... we'll see. First pass at animatic, which of course yielded a whole bunch of new changes to do!

Final Poster

With specific edits requested by the director.

Caught! Animation

Still in progress... but this is my third/most recent animation. :)

This was a character design assignment based on a sound clip. There's a lot more I want to add/fix... but I think it's a good start! I will post some sketches of the character design in process later, as well.

Our Town Poster Designs

A couple of mockups (still in the semi-early design phase) for the Theatre Arts Department Our Town Production Poster. If you're unfamiliar with the show, Our Town, is a show that flaunts the idea of "needing" a set. Our production will have a couple of fragments of pieces that might represent locale or a time, but that's about it. It's a two tables and a couple of chairs... and a highly decorative trellis for those "who need it." The actors mime the rest, and leave it to your imagination to fill in the blanks.

The idea behind the poster is to represent these production ideals - a fragmented representation of reality and/or the fictional illusionistic set that you don't actually need or have.

The first one will eventually have the actors photoshopped in black and white in place of the policeman and the runaway boy in the Rockwell painting. The idea here is to show the stage as it will be: blank... but to show the world that these characters are operating in. You begin to get a sense of this town, but it's not actually there.

The second one highlights an iconic scene from the show (that is also pictured in the first) of the soda shop. It plays with the tension of black and white vs. color... the idea of what's there and what isn't... as well as the symbolism associated with the color.

The third is a darker look at the fragmented pieces. There are bits of reality and the illusionistic stage pieces that the actors would mime - a mixture of fiction and reality. This is the one that I believe is farthest from done, as the layout is a bit off and I am still intending to put more images in the lower left area.

But for now... here are the poster mockups!

Video from Previous Painting

So you can see a little bit of how I was doing it...

Preview Animation... WIP

So this is just a work in progress... still a lot more to do!

This animation is the beginning of a longer portion. Just started the walk cycle but I need to fix a frame towards the end of each cycle. Otherwise... I hope you like it!

Please note that this is only my first attempt at animation... so try to wait till it's completely finished (and I fix the frame!) before judging :-P

Elisa in the Forrest

Oddly... the colors appear a lot different here/on my mac than in the PC lab in Addams. It's the first time I've ever noticed such a large change... but there was a lot more color depth on the PC in this darker painting. Hopefully, you can get somewhat of an idea for what I was going for... and maybe on a PC it will look better (though I just saved the psd to jpeg and the color profile on a Mac, so who knows).

Heading to Ottawa for the Animation Festival in a few short hours. Have to run and pack!!! Here's something to tide over/since I haven't posted in a few weeks. I'll update more hopefully in Canada or when I get back on Sunday. So excited!

Struggling with Computers in Addams

As I continue the never-ending battle with the Addams computer labs and "support" staff... here's a quick post/update.

A lot to mention... Senior Thesis, Schoolism Projects, Summer Work, Friends/Family. Too much to describe in this short note. However, I promise to come back soon and update, and apologize for the summer time off in postings.

Here's a quick digital painting (still have some more I want to do, but it's a comfortable 7 hours at this point) that I would like to explain more later (and perhaps in it's own post). Just a preview of what I'm up to...

Schoolism

It has taken me awhile to get back on top of things recently as I just started a new job. More on that later. Now that I have finally started balancing time there with the rest of my life, I have also started Steven Silver's Character Design class on Schoolism.com. Check it out. Seriously.

I am so excited for this class, and I really do love my job. It is not 100% ideal... but I think right now (or at least today), I am starting to regain some footing for the first time in the past 12 months. I still have a long, long, long way to go before I get back to where I was at the end of sophomore year... but one step at a time. :) I don't know if that's optimism or my first paycheck talking... but hey, I hope it lasts!

Without further ado, my first character design for the class.

Character description: Jerry Loomy
-used car salesman boss, NY, 2008
-A cruel, moody, high strong, dishonest man
-wears a cheap button down shirt, w/ a vest or sports coat and a greasy tank top underneath and a tie that doesn't fit
-middle aged, white male
-negative attitude towards life
-stocky build around 5' 4"
-patch over an eye and missing a finger due to an angry employee biting it off
-lare round head w/ deep set eyes and sunburned skin
-receding hairline w/ a pony tail
-mouth with yellow stained teeth

I know I have a long way to go in this class... but you have to start somewhere. And for me, especially with inventing people, etc. I am at the very beginning.

Here he is:

There's not much difference between the two (besides color obviously). Steven said we didn't need to color it... and I didn't really in the second one - just dropped a multiply layer with a couple of highlights.

Updates soon with 3d models for Scott's class, more art for Josh's class, and more designs for Steven's class! If my boss says it's ok, I might include some stuff here from work too... but we'll see!

p.s. I wonder if anyone can tell which actor/character from a movie I modeled this after...

Wolverine Part _?__

Update:
The past few days I have spent focused almost entirely on coding... but I have found some time here and there to work on FNAR. Here's another Wolverine WIP. More to come :)

Some more WIP...

Restructuring the lighting in this one. I like the way the light is functioning more (still need to finish bringing out the lights in the village), but I feel like this image is losing drawing quality... Maybe once I have the quality of light better together I will be able to fix the rendering quality as well...
Still working! Love how it's starting to come out... but still a lot to do (i.e. ignore the terrible arms right now.... and all the work in the upper chest/head that needs to be done...)

So much to do... so little time...

Still Working

Here's an update:

Village Preview

Still working on this one as well... but here's a preview of the concept I've been working on for the village scene at the end of the book.

took a break for an hr

and now I'm back:

- the chin is stronger/better... but I think I'm going to need to put the teeth in soon and fix the upper lip for it to start looking right

- started working on fixing up the neck and shoulders as well

I'm going to take a short break from modeling to work on some more concept art stuff, but when I come back the goal is to fix up the upper shoulders/neck and flesh out the hands and feet ASAP!

Another Wolverine Screenshot

oooo I already see spots around the eyes I want to fix... but these blog posts are a nice short break :)

Wolverine and Joker WIP

I guess I'm getting very comic oriented :-P

The Wolverine model is really starting to come along, and I believe really starting to look like Hugh Jackman. Here's a temp. screen grab... I'll post another shot in a few hours when I'm farther along. There's still a lot to do but now I'm officially getting excited!

I also worked on coloring the Joker pic quite a bit over the weekend. Don't have a screen grab of that yet, but will later when I post again, hopefully. (I don't think my computer can handle running Photoshop and Maya at the same time and I don't really want to stop modeling. :) )

'Till later...

Been Working All Night

I've been working all night/day/night again to try and get my portfolio stuff together. I lit and rendered a few things from last year.... been working on the Joker... and fixing up/finishing other stuff. Uploading as I go :)

(Gotta work on 277 and ARTH logs too... so don't have time for Fling....)

Color Joker WIP

Another step along the way :)
